Punk.
Apparently, the release of your latest record ‘In Desolation’ received some complaints. Fans didn’t like the supposed change of sound or you signing to Epitaph. Did that amaze you?
The sound didn’t change at all. If anything, I was pissed off that I didn’t let myself make that record even stranger. People will always want you to make the same record over and over again. The problem is that if we did that, they would complain about that as well. We recorded that record with the same guy who did the last one. Its not even that much more polished. People generally suck about it. Start your own band and cater to others if thats what you want to do.
Isn’t that in any awkward because of your heartfelt music? Putting your hardest en most inspiring moments of your life into the music and getting criticized by it.
Again, people suck. If you don’t like the band, don’t come to the shows. I write these songs for people with a fucked up brain like me. They like it, and thats all I care about.
Is the punkrock scene that ignorant or is there a different reason to it?
I’ve noticed that many of the people in the “punk scene” are just as bad as all the people I hated in high school. I’ve met some of the best people in punk, but I’ve also met some of the stupidest.
Do these critics affect you in any way in writing a new record?
I’m not too worried about them. If anything, it makes me want to do something really fucked up that they would hate. Its just music. Its all fucking stupid anyway. At least I don’t wear eyeliner and try to look like I’m in Motley Crue.
I read you were ready to record another record right after ‘In Desolation’. After two years, if you would have recorded, in which ways would it be different if you recorded it today?
I wasn’t ready to, I just wanted to. I still don’t have the songs finished for the new record. I can only do a little bit at a time to make sure its fresh and the lyrics mean something. Otherwise you get that corny bullshit thats popular with mall kids these days.
You will be recording a new record in July with the mighty Bill Stevenson. Are you ready?
Not yet, but thats whats great about it. I work under pressure and drive myself completely crazy before we record. It makes for the best.
This will be your second album on Epitaph. Your relationship with Epitaph, and in general Brett Gurewitz, is really special one, isn’t it?
Brett has done more for me than my own father (which isn’t much, but still pretty cool). I will always be in debt to him for choosing to help me do what I do. I’ve learned a lot from him and respect him more than most people in the music business.
Off With Their Heads speelt op 27 april in de Bazart in Den Haag. Een dag later zal de band optreden op Groezrock.
